Keep Your Writing Top of Mind: How to Maintain Eyeballs on Your Articles Over Time

Writing is the grind of a lifetime. To be a successful writer, you must write. There is no better advertisement for a book than your next book.

I adore writing and find it a challenging aspect of my daily routine. I’ve been writing every day for almost three years, which has helped me amass 1,200 articles and 800 books on Amazon.

The key to writing is understanding timelines, evergreen content, and search engine optimization. You want to get and keep eyeballs on your articles for years.

I Bought a Kindle Oasis

Today I will discuss how I am slowly building an audience at the front and back end of my writing production. I am taking the scenic route (slow way), but it will ensure my writing stays relevant while I travel the world on royalties

Current vs. evergreen. The first step is understanding the difference between current and evergreen writing. Think of current writing like the news.

You will attract far more eyeballs when you write about current news. For example, let’s say you review the latest Samsung GalaxyBook3 Pro 360. You’ll get clicks from shoppers for 2-3 years.

Evergreen content takes a broader approach and can stay relevant for many years or even decades. You may write about how to take great photos with a smartphone camera or how to write 1,000 words every day.

I write mainly using evergreen content (95%) because I think long-term. However, I can mix some current writing to attract eyeballs to my entire portfolio.

Focusing on the front end. As an independent writer, it’s tough to get eyeballs on new content outside of major platforms. That’s why most writers migrate to platforms like Medium, Seeking Alpha (stock market), and BiggerPockets (real estate).

I have a blog that is always my first stop. Blogging differs significantly from “current” news-based media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

You get the most organic traffic on a blog post on the backend (3-6 months later). Therefore, you must create a platform to push traffic to your blog earlier. Also, you can build an audience on WordPress, and they will push your articles out upon release.

Inflation vs. Royalties

I built a Facebook group (Military Family Investing) to link my articles daily. This group helps me get eyeballs on my articles in the first few hours and days. I also get to learn which pieces may perform better over time.

Using Kindle Unlimited. Another approach is using Amazon Kindle Unlimited to get your articles in front of hungry readers.

I create a short 50-page book for every article I publish. I write a new article and add nine older relevant pieces into a package.

I do cover art, an ebook cover, and a paperback cover. This additional graphic design takes another two hours. In all, it takes me 4-5 hours per day to write, edit, design, and publish

However, I now have an asset (a book) that I can push in front of readers any time I want. Kindle Unlimited allows you to give away a book for five days every three months.

Therefore, if you have over 90 books, you can constantly keep a free book in rotation. Each book will have links to your blog, affiliate links, and anything else you want to advertise.

Build your own book platform. When you release your book on Kindle Unlimited, it is exclusive to the platform. However, the articles themselves are not.

The Golden Handcuffs of Lifestyle Inflation

Every other day, I keep a book for my own platform; I put these books into pdf format. These books do not go into Kindle Unlimited, but I can still release them as ebooks on Amazon. They cost the standard $2.99, and I cannot give them away for free on Amazon.

Overall, I have 500 books on Kindle Unlimited and 336 PDF books on my blog. This setup gives me maximum control of my portfolio of books and writing.

Remember, I have 2,500 members in my Facebook group. I can pull out an article from two years ago today (March 4th, 2021: “Buy Land, Start Farm”) and drop it to my group. I have control over the content inside my Facebook group.

Basics of Design 104: Alignment

Pushing in the middle. Now I am building four platforms: Amazon author, WordPress, blogging, and Facebook Group. However, I can keep driving more traffic to my articles.

I recently signed up for Medium and LinkedIn. I have 35 articles on Medium and eight on LinkedIn. These platforms are great because they already have a built-in audience.

I do not need to become prominent on these platforms, only to drive brand awareness with articles I have written. Writing is great because your articles can exist in many places without hassle.

I also release my non-Kindle Unlimited books on Draft2Digital. This site pushes my writing to libraries all over the world. Last month, I made $31 on Draft2Digital. That’s a nice chunk of change for an additional five minutes to upload to the platform.

Love Income? Try Closed-End Funds

The ultimate backend. Now, how do you build passive income as a writer? How do you keep your business sustainable forever by driving free traffic?

That’s right; search engine optimization and Google Search. There is much coverage about ChatGPT taking over Google, but it still needs input from blogs.

Also, if you write in human language, tell stories, share experiences, and give advice, your blog will always be relevant.

Artificial intelligence can’t have kids, become doctors, or go skydiving. However, a doctor can start a sky-diving business with his kids—and write about it.

Cash Flow 105: Diversify Your Passive Income

Search engines are the long game. This will keep your passive income growing forever. My numbers are growing slowly, but I am in a tough niche (personal finance).

Imagine when someone discovers my blog and finds 336 free pdfs and a link to my Free Kindle Book schedule. If they want a paperback, they can buy it directly from Amazon.

Conclusion. Putting it all together is the key. Don’t overwhelm yourself with all these platforms. The most important task of the day is to write an article.

From there, you can link to Facebook, publish to Amazon or Direct2Digital, release it on Medium, and put it on Pinterest. Every article is an asset; use it as such.

Can You Achieve Work-Life Balance 2

My long-term plan is to make $1,000/month in book royalties on Amazon. This is tough because most writers lose money, at least on the front end. I am currently around $200/month without advertising.

In addition to my Amazon royalties, I will have cash flow from affiliate links (book reviews), Draft2Digital, and Google AdSense on my blog.

It’s not a bad setup, mainly because writing is at the heart of the operation. I love being a writer, and all my words are available for free—which is important to me.

What techniques will you use to keep your articles top of mind? Would you consider putting your pieces into book format? There is a steep learning curve, but it is possible and lucrative. Maybe I can release a course showing my daily routine. Good Luck!
