Blogging vs YouTube #1: Build the Right Mindset

This series of articles will be controversial because we all have opinions about these income streams. However, looking at both sides as objectively as possible is good.

Off the rip, 90-95% of people cannot make a good income from either of these sources of revenue. It takes patience, discipline, and delayed gratification to be successful at blogging and YouTube. In today’s TikTok world, these core values are rare indeed.

Where do you start? Before starting either of these massive endeavors, think about yourself 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Where are you at, and who is with you? What is your rich life?

505 Takeaways from 101 Books

I specifically started my blog to earn royalties from writing—I want distinct income streams from dividends, rents, and royalties

These three income streams all come from different markets. We have the stock market, housing market, and consumer markets. This diversity allows me to survive with income intact during a recession or market downturn.

The long game. You can make much more money up front by starting a YouTube Channel. If you pour your heart and soul into the business, you can gain followers rather quickly (compared to blogging).

However, is your audience truly yours? YouTube is famous for its algorithm. They can control who gets in front of their audience at any time.

TSP vs. Dividends

You’ll be on fire when you’re hot, but there is no guarantee you’ll be hot forever. Therefore, you’ll need to diversify your income away from YouTube once you make it big.

Many content creators have started pumping more and more money into their YouTube channels. However, I would ensure I invest at least 60-70% of my earnings into dividends and real estate.

Once you are financially independent, you’ll no longer have to chase the YouTube algorithm. This source of income will be more akin to blogging—a place to earn royalties.

Google search is your friend. Blogging is the long game because of multiple income streams, starting with Google Search.

Super-Charged Savings: Save Quickly for A Down Payment

Earning your credibility within Google Search will take a long time (potentially 3-5 years). They call this domain authority.

However, once Google Search values you as a trusted source, you’ll be “sticky.” You can then parley this organic traffic into multiple streams of revenue.

Organic search is the holy grail of passive income and something every business strives to achieve.

Once you have traffic from organic search, you can add links to YouTube channels, email lists, Amazon books, merchandise, podcasts, and other websites.

Retirement Plus: Use Dividends to Supplement Your Retirement

For this reason, I believe most people should start with a blog because this can be your “forever” hub. Your future endeavors have a better chance of success with organic search built-in.

Is YouTube a hub? Now, if you start with YouTube, it can also be your hub. However, it is much harder to convince your audience to leave YouTube.

People watch YouTube in the gym, on a TV screen, or in the background. Rarely do they interact with links inside the show notes.

Again, you are also chasing the YouTube algorithm; you’ll need likes, comments, and shares to grow your audience base. Dealing with random comments can be time-consuming.

No Freakin’ Way I Am Working Another 25 Years 2

What’s in a personality? YouTubers do best when they have a unique personality—a gift and a curse. I love being myself, but do I want to grow a business based entirely on my face?

If I start a channel called “The Joshua King Channel,” I am now the face of the channel. When I don’t work, I don’t make money.

With a blog, you are as anonymous as you want. People will enter because of keywords from Google Search. If you offer them value, they’ll stick around and potentially tell their friends about your site.

Again, think about the long-term vision of your life before starting. You may want to be a YouTube star right now, but what about in ten years? How can you sell my channel if it is called “The Joshua King Channel?”

Press Record: A Life Living is a Life Worth Recording

The books “Company of One,” “The Four-Hour Work Week,” and “You are the Brand” do an excellent job of preparing us for a successful brand. More importantly, they show us how removing ourselves from our company’s inner working is in our best interests.

Writing vs. Video. Writing is much more sticky than video. I read that TikTok will surpass YouTube in minutes-watched pretty soon.

Now ask yourself, is that the audience you want to chase? Generation Z will spend three hours a day on TikTok. What a mess. I don’t even want to determine how many different videos someone can watch in three hours.

10 Creative Ways to Beat Inflation

People who read will be a much better audience over the long run. Reading is out of vogue, but the few who read are affluent.

Reading is the only way to be truly successful in life. So, creating written content will always be the path to wealth and success.

YouTube is an excellent way to get different opinions on things you have read. You can also get technical information and niche input from various creators.

I love watching different YouTubers describe how Robert Kiyosaki changed their lives—as he changed mine. Blogging is a gateway to a far bigger world than YouTube.

Multiple streams of income. The book “How to Make a Living with Your Writing” opened my eyes to the crazy amount of income streams from writing.

Real Estate Investing in Your 70s

Yes, prominent YouTubers can make more in a year than a writer can make in a lifetime. Again, those few are the 0.01% on YouTube.

A blogger can make $100,000/year passively for the rest of their lives more realistically than a YouTuber. I am chasing the passive income, not trying to create another job.

If you see yourself at age 50, writing for 2-3 hours peacefully, then start a blog. If you want to have the hustle and bustle lifestyle in your 50s, then create a YouTube channel.

Transformations. YouTube and videos are essential elements in today’s life. I watch YouTube religiously while I grind away on my books.

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs #1: Defeating Self-Doubt

However, the audience is fickle. It will be tough to create “quirky” 30-second shorts to gain Generation Z’s attention.

The things that made people wealthy before are still effective today. Writing is a source of great wealth if you can stick with it against the odds.

You can transform your words into blogs, books, audiobooks, podcasts, videos, movies, the metaverse, merchandise, etc.

Set Your Retirement Requirements

There is no limit on writing, and having a blog and email list is a way to establish your own platform. You don’t want your livelihood to depend on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, etc.

Conclusion. Throughout this series, I will evaluate these income streams of different business sizes (solo, three people, and five+ people). I want to stay a solopreneur, so blogging is the way for me.

I am biased towards blogging, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. However, I have a Youtube channel and plan to grow my audience over the next 2-3 years.

Long-form content will always be the way for people to become successful. People who read also purchase online courses and mentorship programs for thousands of dollars.

People who watch 30-second clips probably want to do these things until they convert to long-form content. You’ll have to decide what audience you genuinely want to capture as a business person, content creator, investor, and entrepreneur. Good Luck!
