Play Video Games for Passive Income

I am a massive Pokemon fan. When Nintendo first released the games in 1998 and 1999, I was preparing to join the Marines; thus, I had little time to play with them.

However, on my first deployment to the deserts of 29 Palms, California, in 2000, I picked up Pokemon Yellow. I have been hooked ever since that moment.

I always dream of retiring and having the time to play every Pokemon game at my leisure. However, you know, and I know, we must always build passive income streams. So how do we merge the two ideas?

Can You Achieve Work-Life Balance?

Gaming & Passive income. You build passive income by building an audience and having a boatload of content. You also need to bring in traffic from searches to keep new visitors coming to your business.

The goal is to release evergreen content (it never gets old) and get it on as many searchable platforms as possible. With that information in hand, let’s begin.

Creating evergreen video game content. To create evergreen video game content, it needs to be wholly original. This means you must find your niche and continually build content around it.

Let’s take Pokemon content as an example. You can release Pokemon game reviews, retrospectives, comparisons, Nuzlockes (playing through games with random scenarios), and Pokemon battles.

3 Things I Love About Being a Writer

The YouTuber “The Completionist” plays old and new games to 100% completion. You can watch his content from start to finish. He succeeded in making 100% wholly evergreen content.

YouTube & Streaming. Most people will release their content on YouTube only. You can earn money by streaming your gaming block and then uploading the complete stream to YouTube—this will double your income.

However, this is the grind. You also need to build a library of content to complement your streams. The Completionist streams his content as he completes his games, then creates his original content on top of the streams. He is truly opening up multiple streams of income

Retirement Planning At Any Age

YouTube is a great place to start your business because it has a lot of eyeballs. However, Youtube bases its algorithm on activity; thus, you must remain active to keep your income high. We want to ensure we build a passive business that keeps bringing in fresh eyeballs.

Blog & Google Search. YouTube is fast money (not easy money) compared to blogging. The holy grail of passive income is creating a blog that brings in massive traffic from Google searches—that is the long game.

Don’t worry; you can build both platforms at the same time. It takes a little more time, but adding a blog entry for your game content can increase your reach by 5X-10X.

Your blog should always be your home base of ALL your content; that’s how you build a true empire. On your blog, you can link all of your YouTube videos.

This way, if you rank for multiple Google searches, people will also see your YouTube videos. If you stop YouTubing for a few months, native Google search content will continue driving traffic to your videos.

Blogs to books. Once you have blog content, you also have book content. I am a huge fan of getting your blog words into the Amazon search algorithm.

You can put your books on Kindle Unlimited and release them for free. This drives even more content to your blog and YouTube videos.

If you have special edition books, you can release them wide, tapping into search algorithms from Apple Books, Google Books, Scribd, KOBO, etc. You can see where I am going with this technique.

Read the Publishing Chronicles (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5) for more on how to release your books across various platforms.

Podcasting. When you play video games, you don’t necessarily have to talk about the games. I would love to play Pokemon games while talking about money topics.

Any time you talk, you can compile your words into podcasts. Podcasting will give you access to podcasting platforms like Apple and Spotify.

The goal of podcasting is to get sponsors and extend your reach to commuters. Most people don’t want to listen to video game information as they drive; therefore, you can conform to the needs of your people.

Diversify Your Passive Income

Merchandising and Patreon. You can add in T-Shirts, mugs, collections, etc., so your Superfans can support your channel. Most people will not purchase anything for you, nor do you need them to do so.

Roughly 10% of your audience will become Superfans, and that’s all you need. Adding niche extras won’t cost you much because they will be print-on-demand items.

Your Superfans will also join your Patreon, which is a member’s only platform. It’s an excellent way to interact with your top fans.

Email list. Along the way, you want to build an email list. This ensures you have access to your fans without the assistance of another platform.

At any given time, Google, Apple, or Amazon, can kick you off their platform. Prepare yourself by having an email list. You’ll need to offer a unique gift to entice your fans to hand over their email address.

Putting it all together. You want to ensure your content is on as many search platforms as possible. This is how you build a passive income empire.

Your blog is the heart and soul of your business. Yes, YouTube is the flashy disco of the video world, but Google controls your reach. Plus, Google can censure your content at will.

Why Do I Need to Invest in the Stock Market?

So your blog can link to your books, videos, podcasts, merchandise, Patreon, and email list. That’s why your blog will need to be the hub of your video game business.

This doesn’t sound passive; it’s very active. Your work is separate from your money. I can release a book today but earn income from books I released a year ago.

I freed myself from exchanging time for money. I exchange time for assets. In the world of video games, the main assets are videos. However, you will also have blog posts and books.

Take it slow and stay consistent. Your goal is to build a massive library of content slowly. Once you have a robust video game and blog post library, you’ll keep adding to the ocean of content.

Retire Early as a Well-Rounded Millionaire

People can shuffle through your videos and blog posts as they find you from the various search engines. Over the years, you’ll continually add more and more Superfans to your audience.

Once you have an audience, you can further monetize them through sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and crowdfunding. Only your imagination can stop you.

Can you imagine having 1,000+ videos, 500+ blog posts, and 200+ books? These numbers will give you massive reach and searchable results. Take your time and stay in the game for the long run.

Conclusion. Yes, I understand that this doesn’t sound passive. However, you create a business like this for passive income ten years from now. If you build this set up in your 20s, you’ll reap the benefits for the rest of your life.

Run a Passive Airbnb Business

A searchable business can be your retirement plan. Or, more than likely, someone will want to buy your audience and business. An email list is invaluable to other companies.

But imagine, in ten years, being able to play the games you want, and make large sums of money passively. You don’t have to chase the YouTube algorithm.

If your new video doesn’t do well on YouTube, you have thousands of people coming to your blog from search which can find it. That’s the idea behind having multiple streams of search.

One day, I hope to set up a system like this so I can play my Pokemon games while earning passive income and building an empire. Good Luck!
