I am saving the best for last, or at least my favorite. Writing has changed my life, and I am proud to present this piece as a writer. Over the past year, I have written over 650,000 words, equivalent to 21 (30,000 words) full-length books.
I believe writing is the best form of Passive Income from Creativity (101, 102, 103, 104, 105) because you can easily add the other types over top of your words.
My favorite part of writing is the portable nature of this medium. You can write anywhere you want, and words last much longer than other forms of passive income. The book “How to Make a Living with Your Writing” already beat me to the punch in this article, so I will cover primarily methods that I use.
What Type of Home Business Should You Start?
Start a Blog. The best way to jump into the wonderful world of writing is by starting a blog. When I started my blog, I had no idea what the heck I was trying to accomplish. But that is exactly where you want to start.
Whatever information you have in your head is not enough to create daily content. You’ll start by sounding smart and giving the reader as much content as possible. However, you will soon run dry because it takes a lot of information to feed readers daily content.
Eventually, you will get to the point where you will have to start planning your content and gaining a broader knowledge base. I call this “Creating a Never-Ending Stream of Content.”
Reading the book “How to Take Smart Notes” is the first step in building the ultimate collection of content. Next, you split your primary content niche into five (or six) main topics. Finally, you read multiple books under each of the main topics. Let’s do an example.
How to Create Passive Income 103: For Advanced
Niche Example. Let’s say our niche is Healthy Outdoor Living. First, we can break this down into five topics.
- Eating well on the go
- Outdoor fitness
- Outdoor sports
- Group outdoor activities
- Outdoor meditation
Now, I would start reading books and following websites on these topics. I would begin to form my ideas and gear my life to contribute even more to my content. For example, you could start hiking or join a running group.
The true power of having excess content is combining topics. These combinations would be wholly unique and help separate you from the other blog sites. You could write an article like “What foods are best after your morning meditation?” or “Which burns more calories hiking or running?”
In 2021, I published over 400 articles, and I have more than that ready to write for 2022. I genuinely have a never-ending stream of content.
Writing books. Now that you have learned the secret to being a content creator, you can navigate many other spaces. You can repurpose your content into a weekly or monthly magazine.
From $28/mo to $700/mo in Passive Income in Two Years
I am a huge proponent of repurposing your content because each platform has its own type of followers. For example, your article will reach different customers via email, Facebook, Amazon Kindle, blogs, and websites like Medium.
Books are a great way to reach the most avid readers of them all—Kindle Unlimited subscribers. They say that some KU readers consume over one book a day, and I can see that as being true. You have enough to make a name for yourself on KU if you are producing daily content.
Writing reviews. As you read more books and partake in more activities, you will begin to list items you can promote. Affiliate marketing is the act of promoting products that may earn you a small commission.
How to Stay Motivated
Our Healthy Outdoor Living blog can host book reviews and health & outdoor-related products reviews. Affiliate marketing is a great passive income stream that grows with your audience.
Writing fiction. I believe there is a massive market for daily romance or mystery experiences. I would like to try my hand at them, but I am currently building my eBook series Financial Independence Magazine (currently at #54).
If someone decided to write one chapter of their book every day, it would be a huge hit. Once the book had enough chapters, they could publish it on Amazon. Or, they could write micro-stories, all of them standalone.
For example, I could write daily short stories about Detective Mike Coffee, who lives in a small town in Florida. I would have a set template to follow every day: crime introduction, crime scene analysis, characters, plot twist, and resolution.
My daily content would probably need roughly 2,000 words to have an engaging story. But, wow, how amazing would that be to craft a new adventure every day?. You could package these articles in Mystery Novel Collection Magazine and release them on the KU platform every week. People would love this, and your back catalog would become golden.
How to Write 1000+ Words Every Day
The grind. Writing is the grinder, which is why I am drawn to it. As a writer, you have two options—release a ton of content or advertise a small number of books.
I choose to write a ton of content, at least while I have the capacity. I want to reach Financial Independence Magazine #1000, which would be 20 years of daily writing. When you look back at all the content you created, it is a surreal experience.
Prepare yourself mentality for the grind and know precisely why you are submitting yourself to this sort of pressure. I love the books “The Practice” and “On Writing Well” as good starting points.
Repurpose your words. Once you publish your words, the world is your oyster. As you read earlier in this series, everything starts with words.
Here are some things you can do once you have a catalog of writing: start a podcast, launch a YouTube channel, produce audiobooks, or build an online course.
There are too many things to list. I haven’t even talked about getting your work translated into other languages. You can also upload to other platforms outside of Kindle Unlimited.
Retire Early as a Well-Rounded Millionaire
Writing for the Soul. I truly love writing, and more importantly, being a writer. Initially, it is difficult to release your content into the world for fear of rejection. Get over it—no one cares.
Over time you learn about the 90-9-1 rule. 90% of people are consumers, 9% are editors, and 1% are producers. You can join that elite group of producers. Trust me; once you enter this world, you won’t want to go back to being a consumer.
The main challenge of writing is creating engaging content. To find your unique angle, you must first release your work and let the market decide what they want to hear from you. It sounds counter-intuitive, but that’s how the game operates.
After a year, 650,000+ words, 400+ articles, and 300+ mini-books, I am just getting started. That was year one and 2,000 of my 10,000 hours to becoming a successful author-entrepreneur.
Of all the six different types of creativity income streams (music, photography, art, video, audio, and writing), writing is by far my favorite. That’s because it fits perfectly into my life.
You have to decide which of the six draws you in and learn how to exploit your talent. It may be hard to get started, but you will grow to love the challenge as you enhance your skills. I wish everyone an extraordinary journey to building passive income from creative pursuits. Good Luck!
