Don’t Gamble with Retirement 12

What does retirement mean to you? After being retired for six months, I can tell you what it means to me. It means I don’t get anxious when I go to bed on Sunday night.

It means that my most important meetings of the day are with my wife and kids. It means I prioritize my family’s needs above everything else.

It also means that I must always ensure that my finances are on point. Luckily, I rely on multiple passive income streams to keep cash flowing through the household. If you are serious about retiring early, you should follow these steps.

Budgeting for the win. The essential part of retiring early is determining how much monthly cash flow your family needs. The lower the number, the earlier you retire.

It’s much easier to retire when you require $4,000/month than $10,000. People living in big cities with big budgets must work hard to support this lifestyle. Life is a math game.

Most people don’t have a set amount to spend on monthly food and entertainment, so that I would start there. For example, our family household food budget is $800/month. This forces us to make necessary concessions when we enter Walmart. Compromise is a good thing.

Where do you live? Your most considerable expense in retirement will be your housing costs. That’s why most people don’t retire until they pay off their home.

However, you can alleviate some of the housing cost burden by getting roommates, renting your car, or starting a home business.

Try to bring in enough income to cover your mortgage. Once you finish paying off your home, you’ll still have this wonderful income stream. It’s almost like magic.

Time for passive income. It’s time to bring in even more money once you reduce your housing costs and live comfortably on a budget.

Why do you need more money? Because life tends to happen when you don’t plan for it. You’ll need to travel, fix the roof, or buy a newer car. I aim to bring in 25% more income than your monthly budget.

If your budget is $6,000/month, I would aim for $8,000. The good part is that you have all the time in the world to pursue your new income streams. The first step is building a dividend portfolio.

You can try your hand at writing, blogging, YouTubing, or creating music. You can start a consulting or tutoring business. You can purchase a vending machine or ATM. The world is your oyster.

Conclusion. What is the end goal of retiring early and living on passive income? We must all focus on the integrity of our family.

How can we ensure our kids will be good to go when we are off going to meetings and checking emails from random people?

Once you retire, the main goal is to pay it forward to your kids and grandkids. You can scout the housing market, make investments, and teach them business.

Many people use retirement to focus solely on themselves, and that is their right. I choose the opposite path. I want my kids and grandkids to have a guardian angel who values their success more than anything.

How you spend your retirement is a personal matter. However, you’ll need to create a tight budget that allows your family to become successful without a paycheck. It’s possible, and it’s fantastic. Good Luck!
