This is Why I Became a Writer

This is Why I Became a Writer and Changed My Life Forever

My wife and I traveled to Turkey in 2019 and immediately fell in love with this fantastic country. We decided we wanted to move to Turkey one day in retirement.

We knew we would have a military pension to support us; however, I wanted also to earn more income and stay productive.

Working locally wouldn’t bear fruit, so I needed another plan. I reviewed the checklist of things I could do, and starting an online business was the best option.

Retirement Planning for the Average Person 3

Going through all available options. Starting a business or creating content online is a challenging proposition.

The internet (and metaverse) is a massive place with tons of businesses and content creators. How would I crave out my own piece of real estate on the web?

I went through the automated business options, including selling on Amazon, starting a Shopify store, or creating digital products.

Of these, creating digital products had the most potential. However, building an audience is the best way to sell anything, anywhere. I needed to create content to build an audience.

What content to create? I went down the list of creative options I could pursue. I then compared it to the life we wanted to live in Turkey.

  1. YouTube creator. YouTube requires a fast internet connection and lots of space for a studio, camera equipment, and video editing computers.
  2. Photography. I need to learn photography first. And I would get paid in local Turkish Liras (which are inflating like crazy).
  3. Art & Design. I never fancied myself as an artist, but I could take classes and give it a shot. NFTs and tattoo art will be critical drivers of artists versus AI-created artwork.
  4. Podcasts. I would love to start a podcast, but you need a studio, quality equipment, and high-profile guests to become significant.
  5. Music. I don’t think I am musically inclined, but I would also need a studio and music equipment.
  6. Writing. I could write from my laptop, travel the world, and need a tiny amount of internet. This seemed like a winner.

Living the laptop life as a writer. So I became a writer because it is the most portable way to generate income while building an audience.

However, writing is like a reverse algorithm. Your words become more valuable over time, starkly contrasting the algorithms for YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok.

Emergency Escape: Build a High-Yield Emergency Fund

Writing is a long game, so I started writing three years before my military retirement. So, how has laptop life treated me thus far?

I love laptop life. I connect my laptop to a huge monitor with a keyboard and mouse when I am home. However, when I travel, I can just grab my laptop and continue writing.

I write on my Macbook Air religiously, but I travel with my Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360. Writing is about creating content as much as consuming it.

My Galaxy Book allows me to consume movies, books, and magazines. I can use pen & touch input, which I love when conducting research. It has a much bigger screen when I need to chrome windows side by side.

It’s Raining Money: How Dividends Can Change Your Life

I am slowly starting to see the fruits of my writing labor. I publish books to Amazon and Draft2Digital, and they generate passive income.

My blog (www.militaryfamilyinvesting.com) is also starting to get free traffic from Google Search. It is a slow process, but well worth the wait.

I aim to build steady cash flow from affiliate marketing, book sales, website ads, and Medium views. It all just takes time to come together.

How has writing changed my life? Outside of creating income, writing forces you to see the world through a different lens.

First, read many books and articles to refill your “creativity well.” New ideas and concepts will help you see the world from a unique perspective.

Then you must find a way to convey your thoughts and opinions to your audience so they can digest them.

Remember, you may know much more about a subject than them. How can you get them to understand while keeping their attention—it’s challenging.

Most importantly, you want to create evergreen content—words that will stand the test of time. You can write about current events, but taking the time to convert the daily emotion into something long-term will pay off in spades.

My recommendation to new writers. Don’t go into writing if you need quick cash. This is not a profession for easy money or even big money.

However, writing can have a massive payoff after 4-6 years. You can build an email list, start a newsletter, and grow a book club.

The Biggest Book on Passive Income Ever 2!

Once you have direct access to your audience (outside a platform like Facebook), you can grow your income exponentially.

Write about what you love. Don’t be afraid to repeat your same thoughts over and over again. Remember, people come to you for daily motivation and passion, so let your voice shine through your words.

I am a hardcore income investor. My favorite writer creates articles about income investing every day, and I stop by to read them every day.

You can have the same effect on people. What are you passionate about, and how can you get others to love it as much as you?

Writing versus artificial intelligence. Will AI destroy the careers of all writers? Of course not. But you will need to write more personal pieces.

Your articles need to use the word “I” more. You’ll generate subpar content if you are afraid to talk about your experiences or take a stand on an issue.

AI cannot have kids, leave generational wealth, or attend college. It doesn’t have fear, anxiety, or love. Therefore, these things are what will separate us from the machines.

If AI attempts to create fake experiences or stories, it will quickly go south. People are intelligent and can catch a fake without fail.

Conclusion. Now is the perfect time to become a writer. I write about financial freedom almost every day.

I am passionate about telling my journey toward financial independence. What are you passionate about? What gets you excited every morning?

Our brains are 50% creative; however, we use our logical side more often. To see both sides of the world, we must create.

There are tons of ways to create outside of writing, but becoming a writer is a unique journey. You meet exciting writers and form some strong opinions.

If you want to live the laptop life or become a digital nomad, I can’t think of a better way than writing. However, be prepared to invest 4-6 years to build your writing foundation. Good Luck!
