“Build Your Music Career From Scratch” by Andrae Alexander is a guide on how to build your music career from nothing. I am a fan of building a creative career independently by leveraging new tools at our disposal.
Along with writing, podcasting, and video, music is much easier to start than 10-20 years ago. However, that means that more people have access to the same resources you have available.
To build a music career, you must understand where you are heading. Look at an artist you admire, and work backward from their career.
There are many paths to success in music, such as artist, band member, musician, manager, producer, mixer, and DJ. You may need a few or all of these skills to reach your next echelon of success.
1) More than being creative and making great music is needed to become successful. You have to market and publicize your work. These can be full-time jobs on their own.
2) You can hire roadies to follow you on tour. They may cost money, but they can help you set up your stage and equipment and make your band look more professional.
3) You will probably be an opening act on your first tour. They may not pay you, but you can sell CDs and merchandise.
4) You should hire a manager if you have multiple gigs on your calendar. A manager’s job is to ensure you receive your pay and the venue sets up everything correctly.
5) A catalog of great music is the best way to demonstrate experience in the field. This is more than just music on your thumb drive. You need to produce and release the pieces with the help of professionals.
Music labels want artists with a “pre-built” audience and a backlog of music. This means that you should have a YouTube channel, social media, gigs, and CDs.
In most cases, your work as an independent artist needs to be comparable to that of a record-label artist.
If you reach this level of music fandom, do you truly need a record label deal? You may want to sign for fame and distribution.
However, I am a fan of staying independent. Over the course of 20-30 years, owning your music and publishing rights will put you in the winner’s seat.
I have no plans to be a musician; however, it is excellent to understand how this path parallels a writing career. Ultimately, you must take your career into your hands and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Good Luck!
