Gen F'd

5 Takeaways from “Gen F’d”

Gen F’d: How Young Australians Can Reclaim Their Futures” by Alison Pennington looks at how Generation Z and younger Millennials can regain control of their lives.

I’ll admit that the author and I share different economic views; I consider myself a capitalist. However, I did work for the government for 24 years and had a certain mindset through those years.

The author believes in big government, social programs, unions, and the power of the people. This book is well-researched, and I can almost see her vision through her words.

She wants the government to function at a high level, using swift reactions to assist Australians in training for new jobs while providing housing, training, and education.

It is a utopian vision of the world, which does sound really good. However, I may be cynical because of my 24 years with the government.

1) Generation Z is holding a bad hand. Housing is too expensive, it’s almost impossible to find steady work, unions can’t help, and it’s hard to organize a reliable protest.

2) The author blames Neoliberalism (extreme capitalism) for the wealth disparity between high-income wealthy households and the poor and working class.

3) Capitalism is good at making two things: Rich people and poor people (my personal thoughts). This is where the author and I disagree.

I believe that anyone can participate in this new economy if they can educate themselves in the ways of capitalism. They may not become Uber rich, but they can provide for their families and obtain assets.

4) To her credit, Neoliberalism conducted massive strikes to dismantle unions, cut public funding, and give tax breaks to people holding assets.

5) The new generation has to cobble together steady work, pay for education, and find affordable housing. But I ask, is this a government problem or a family issue?

I enjoyed reading this book because the author pieces together the future from all angles. She does place some of the onus back on the individual as well.

She discusses education, training, housing, unemployment, stay-at-home mothers, workplace culture, governments, unions, and families.

Her opinions are strong and well-researched. Reading this book has opened my eyes to the other side of the argument that the government plays a role in uplifting all its citizens.

I spent the first 20 years in the workforce, believing the government would save me. I would work for the government for 50 years and retire with my two pensions and social security.

Over the last four years, I have read books on becoming a capitalist (business, investing, real estate). I have amassed much wealth and built a better life while practicing capitalism.

If I can convert from government “dude” to small-time capitalist, anyone can. However, reading the other side is just as important to my viewpoint moving forward.

Not everyone will have tenants, invest in the stock market, or start a business; that’s why this book is so important to shaping my perspective.

This book is great for right and left-wing pundits alike. We all need to understand all sides and come together to work towards a better future—as the author so eloquently states.
