5 Takeaways from “The Independent Homeschool”

The Independent Homeschool” by Fred Ray Lybrand is a journey of learning “how to learn.” Specifically, it teaches us how to create independent learners that can teach themselves.

My life goal is to homeschool my grandkids throughout their lives. I am preparing myself now for how to run a homeschool successfully. This is my first book on my journey to be a homeschool educator.

Many people don’t homeschool because they are not confident in their abilities to “teach” their children. But what if we create children that can teach themselves?

That is the mission of the independent homeschool—to create independent students that can teach and grade themselves. Going further, these students will become well-adjusted adults who continue to learn and grow for the rest of their lives.

1) The goal of the independent homeschool is to produce a child that is ready in seven different areas: academic, practical, logical, social, emotional, cultural, and spiritual.

2) Systems thinking is a mindset to improve upon the mission continually. The goal is slowly to enhance parts of the system to obtain better results through trial and error. It is essential to understand what systems are in place in your homeschool.

3) Homeschooling is fundamentally about reading, writing, and arithmetic—the three Rs. These are the foundation of everything one needs to become a learner.

4) As parents, we have to move away from growing “happy” kids to asking how to create “happy” adults. Adults that can learn new skills and adjust to an ever-changing world will be “happy.” Thus teaching our children how to learn continually will lead to increased lifetime happiness.

5) An independent learner has ten skills: emotions, goals, focus, memory, time, reading, writing, communication, relationships, and problem-solving. Together, these form the basis of a child ready to take on adulthood.

What if your child isn’t motivated? Motivation takes three things: what you want (the goal), what you have (current situation), and time (a chosen deadline).

When you put these together into a plan, you create motivation. Knowing that we cannot just tell someone what to do to motivate them helps us ask better questions.

The more I learn about “how to learn,” the more intrigued I am about the process. I am a lifelong student; I just never realized it. Now, as the world changes readily, I am positioned to move at the same pace.

I need to understand how to transfer this ability to learn to my grandkids. This book is magical and a work of art. Learning how to learn may be the most important skill one can possess.

I recommend this book to everyone that wants to maximize life via information, knowledge, and action. Homeschooling will play a more prominent role in education moving forward. I am preparing for this homeschool future. Good Luck!
