Blogging vs YouTube #4: For Large Income Streams

Welcome back to the Blogging vs. YouTube series (#1, #2, #3). I want to jump right in with a comparison between a big-time YouTuber and a big-time blog.

YouTube. Perhaps the biggest technology YouTuber is Marques Brownlee. I watch him for anything Apple, Samsung, and technology related. He has 15.8 million subscribers as of this article.

He now has a full-time staff to help him push his videos to the “sharpness” level that viewers desire. He has interviewed many CEOs of major corporations, including Elon Musk.

Fundrise vs. USDC

Blog. My favorite real estate website is BiggerPockets. Brandon Turner started the website in 2004, and it now has 28 employees. They have 2 million registered members, including me.

I have bought at least five books from BiggerPockets writers. They have a massive forum where agents, property managers, and investors can meet.

Who is in a better position? Which would you rather be, the famous YouTuber or the nameless head of BiggerPockets? That’s a personal question you have to ask yourself.

Becoming a mega YouTuber is possible for anyone willing to do the work. Of course, you don’t want to discuss politically sensitive topics that can divide people. You’ll have to create content with a wholesome approach if you’re going to reach the masses.

From Dirt to Dividends 3

Similarly, reaching mega-blog status is possible if you spend the hours and make the connections. You’ll have to get your name out there and get people to visit your website outside of search.

You will need to become a destination website that people visit when they want to catch up on news or events. But do you have what it takes to become this large?

You’ll need full-time employees. As a prominent content creator, you are now a full-on business. You will have a 401K plan, human resources, taxes, and full-time employees.

This side hustle will now be your full-time job. In “Your Dream Job: Find It or Create It?” you created your dream job. Will it stay your dream?

How We Plan to Retire on Dividends 3

Issues with being a large YouTuber. First and foremost, all 15 million of Marques Brownlee’s subscribers signed up to see him. We all check in with his channel to get HIS opinion of new phones and gadgets.

At this point, we don’t want to see anyone else talking on his channel except him. If he wanted, he could introduce other creators to ease the burden. But, it may take years to wean people off of seeing him.

Another Youtube channel called “Chrome Unboxed” started with one creator. However, early on, he began introducing other creators to his audience. This will help if he wants to make a big exit in the long run.

Dividends vs. Social Security

Issues with becoming a massive blog. At this point, the blog isn’t even yours anymore. Brandon Turner is no longer CEO of BiggerPockets; however, he keeps his podcasts going.

Do you genuinely want to manage 28 employees? I sure as heck don’t. These mega blogs can lose the personal touch as well. Many people love the feel of small blogs.

Making a large exit. Who do you think is in a better position to make a large exit; Marques or BiggerPockets?

BiggerPockets can advertise their books, podcasts, and merchandise. They have the eyeballs to be their own media conglomerate. Marques has a massive audience and gets 4-5 million views per video.

However, are these viewers buyers or watchers? I am sure he receives a hefty sum from affiliate marketing. He also does some sponsorships with cell phone protector brands.

Marques still controls his channel and brand—this is a positive. When you log into BiggerPockets, you don’t know who is in charge, nor do you care.

BiggerPockets can sell their brand to a bigger brand for millions of dollars. They have their own podcasts area, forums, and bookstore. Plus, most importantly, they have eyeballs. The employees could continue as if nothing had happened.

What do you want in life? Some people love to work. They dream of building their channel into a mega-brand in their rich life.

Retirement Plus: Use Royalties to Supplement Your Retirement

What’s the shelf life of a YouTuber? Nobody knows because YouTube has only been around since 2005. I don’t foresee it going anywhere, but TikTok is getting close to surpassing it in watch hours.

A blog can last indefinitely. Your blog will continue to survive if someone pays for the hosting web service. If he still owns BiggerPockets, Brandon Turner can offer jobs to his family members and children (perhaps?).

Build Your Rep: Create Your Body of Work

Owning a blog opens up lifetime wealth for your entire network of family and friends. A blog is infinitely expandable because you can keep bolting on sections over time.

For example, BiggerPockets can add a small “Real Estate in the Metaverse” section or real estate NFT trading in the forums. If these ideas don’t pan out, they can quickly cancel them.

Where do you see yourself in 10 or 20 years? Why are you starting a blog or YouTube? If it is for the money, now is an excellent time to consider the future.

If you stay consistent, the money will come. All you need to do is add value constantly, and people will always look for you. Once the money comes, what is next?

Retire By Age 38 in 10 Difficult Steps

Do you want to scale to an incredible size and be world renown? Or do you want to stay behind the scenes and earn money passively? I believe this question will direct you to what platform is the best fit for your situation.

You can do both. You can have a blog and a YouTube channel, but one needs to be your leading platform. It’s tough to grow on both simultaneously.

Blogging is the best to start with because it takes much longer to get organic traffic. Organic web traffic is the best way to get people to your content. The sooner you start growing this, the better.

Conclusion. It’s been four episodes of this series, so which is my favorite way to create content? Yes, I’ll take blogging for the win.

Blogging will take much longer to build organic traffic, but it can last a lifetime. A blog is infinitely expandable, and you can leverage your domain authority to grow even more websites using backlinks.

Youtube is a fantastic platform; viewers can connect with you and your content easier and faster. However, if you are planning a big exit, start a brand. Do not build the channel just around your likeness—this makes it hard to sell your channel.

REITs vs. Homeownership: The Fun of Fundrise

As I wrote in “Advertising in the Metaverse,” the days of big brands selling things directly to people are becoming short. People want organic and natural advertising from people they know, like, and trust

With either content delivery system, you’ll need to create meaningful content that adds value to someone’s life.

If you don’t know what this looks like, consider if anyone has ever made you ponder a question when you are in the shower. That is meaningful content. Good Luck either way you choose!
