5 Takeaways from “3 Secrets to Effective Time Management”

3 Secrets to Effective Time Management” by Elizabeth Grace Saunders is a must-read for those who struggle with time management.

Elizabeth Saunders’ approach to time management is about accomplishing the important things first. It may seem simple, but you must identify what is essential to you BEFORE you start your day.

Before she gets into the actual steps of organizing your day, she tells us about the emotional side of planning. There is a deeper side to the actions we deem important, and we may fail without knowing these subconscious reasons.

1) You may succumb to overwork or ambivalence (laziness) if you do not have a concrete plan for the day or week. You need a purpose.

2) Find your personal definition of success. Only you can define what success looks like to you. It could be spending time with your family while running a home business. Whatever the case, identify it early.

3) Don’t try to “manage time,” which may lead to overwork. Instead, identify your priorities and ensure you achieve these moments or events. For instance, you may want to attend your child’s football games on Friday evenings.

4) Form habits to get things done when we encounter strong resistance (hunger, laziness, tiredness). I write and edit early in the morning because I have zero resistance during midnight hours.

5) Work-Life balance is about setting your goals around your entire life. You must consider your family and work as you plan your day, week, and month. Again, only you can identify your version of success.

The author says, “Life is messy, not perfect,” and I agree. I am working full time and writing full time. I have to make time for my writing career. I also have to balance these activities with my family and spending time with them.

We cannot let life beat us down to the point of ambivalence (laziness). We must achieve success to find happiness and purpose. Work and family on their own can create overwhelm; you must balance them inside a unified schedule.

This book is terrific for people who struggle with finding purpose, staying on schedule, and giving themselves a break. I took away a renowned focus to identify what is essential for my survival.

We have to leave some things behind in our quest for financial freedom. By identifying our definition of success, we can drop tasks and events that don’t factor into our overall happiness. This is a must-read book to increase your productivity and quality of life.
