5 Takeaways from “Manage Your Day-To-Day”

Manage Your Day-To-Day” by Jocelyn K Glei is a book for creatives by creatives. There are over 20 articles from prominent creative professionals giving us insights into becoming a creative professional.

I am roughly two years into my journey as a creative professional, and it has been extraordinary. The strides you can reach as a creative far outstrip that as an employee. However, the pay is not as good, at least for now.

And therein lies the rub for creatives—the balance between payment and artistic work. It’s a tightrope that is tough to measure but is necessary to discuss.

This book is so powerful because having successful creatives impart wisdom and experience to us up-and-comers can change the trajectory of our careers. Studying the “art of creating” is a humbling experience for me.

1) My most significant takeaway is to create something every day. I read this before, and it is a model I live by vigorously. Your brain will give you ammunition for success, but you have to point it towards the target.

2) You will need to replenish your “creative well” from time to time. We can do this by taking a break, reading, or interacting with new people.

3) Being creative is about forming a practice. Some examples include eating the same food, sitting in the same chair, and drinking coffee at the same time every day. When you develop your habits around creating, your mind turns on its creative juices.

4) 99% of people cannot get to the point where they can create something every day for a couple of days. Just sitting down and creating garbage every day is something the vast majority of people cannot even imagine.

5) Perfectionism is a curse you will have to work hard to defeat. It’s better to get your work out into the world and slowly improve it than attempt to ship a perfect product.

I feel strongly about creating something every day—it’s my new life’s model. The amount of things I have learned through creating is beyond explanation.

I still have so many ideas to flesh out and projects to start, but through it all, I create. If you feel the slight urge to create, then read this book.

It will be hard for 99% of people to get past the work phase, ship their work, and receive feedback. However, if it is something you want to attempt, start today.

Start small, with maybe a poem or five-minute video. Create these every day until something inspires you to expand these ideas. Our minds fuel our creative abilities; we just need to tell them we are serious about our endeavors.

This is a fantastic book I will recommend to anyone thinking of becoming a creative professional or starting a business. Well done.
