5 Takeaways from “From Paycheck to Purpose”

From Paycheck to Purpose” by Ken Coleman takes us on a deep dive into how to find our dream job. I am not looking for another job after finishing my military career, but I found the book very insightful and helpful. Even if you plan to become a content creator or entrepreneur, this book has something for you.

Most people find and stay at their job for the wrong reasons. Maybe it’s easy, convenient, or pays adequately; however, they become miserable in their positions.

They begin to envision their dream job, environment, status, and pay. However, most people do not have a blueprint for achieving this dream position. In today’s world, chances are your dream job isn’t at your current company.

Thus, you will have to navigate multiple companies, positions, and bosses to obtain the holy grail of the dream job, environment, pay, and timing. Luckily, this book gives us the blueprint to maneuver toward our dreams slowly.

1) Get clear. This is the part of the path where you define who you are, what you want, and what you love doing. Without passion, you won’t find your dream job.

2) Get qualified. You’ll have to build your job skills and resume to position yourself as a “must-hire professional. It’s like how I learned to create book covers and publish ebooks on Amazon. You have to start yourself anew.

3) Get connected. Now is not the time to be a “loner” or introvert. You need to go out and meet the people who work inside the circle of your new job. Also, your expanded network is your best chance at finding someone on the “inside.”

4) Get started. This step is about recognizing and overcoming limiting beliefs. I talk about limiting beliefs often because they will hold you back indefinitely if you do not defeat them.

5) Get promoted. Now it is about working towards your goals. You will become the go-to person, but remember to stay humble and remain a team player. It’s all about the team’s success.

The final two steps are “get your dream job” and “give yourself away.” Giving yourself away entails using your skills to volunteer or serve a higher purpose in the community.

I was shocked to find that working towards your dream job is akin to becoming an entrepreneur or content creator. Seriously, you pretty much have to form the same skill set as an entrepreneur.

You need to sell yourself, your product (resume), advertise, network, build your skill set, build a higher skill set, become a team player, etc. The same people working towards becoming their best selves can also become great entrepreneurs or content creators.

Which begs the question, why not just start a business or create content for yourself? I do not have the answer, but I know that getting your dream job takes a passion most people do not have.

This book is for you if you are among the few people who have the drive, determination, and grit to work towards your dream position. It is an actionable blueprint that you can use to build a fantastic career, future, and life. I highly recommend this book to employees, managers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and content creators.
