5 Takeaways from “Book Cover Design Secrets”

Book Cover Design Secrets You Can Use to Sell More Books” by Derek Murphy is a how-to guide for authors. Most experts tell authors not to publish their own book covers because they make many rookie mistakes.

However, you can save a lot of money by learning to create your own covers. This book gives us guidance on how to build solid covers. Also, it shows us a lot of bad advice that indie others and professionals have been feeding the industry.

1) It’s okay to be cliché with your book cover. Readers are looking for covers to convey genre and setting. Trying to do something different will not lead to mainstream success.

2) Even if you pay someone to create your covers, it’s good to learn enough to spot a bad cover.

3) Fiction covers need to appeal to the heart, while non-fiction covers appeal to the brain. Non-fiction covers can be witty and funny, while fiction should convey mood, tone, and setting.

4) The book cover needs to appeal to the average reader, not someone in your fan group or “in the know.” The average person should know the setting or context of your book from the cover.

5) The book cover is the first part of your sales funnel. After the cover, they will read the description and maybe “look inside.” You can lose a lot of sales with an ugly book cover.

This book gives examples of good and bad covers. The general idea is that it is okay to be cliché. If you look at movie posters, they are similar within each genre—it’s the same idea for book covers.

I have created over 400+ book covers, and I am still learning. My covers aren’t as good as the professionals’ covers, but they are also free. The pros are paying large sums of cash that they will need to recoup from book sales. My books are pure profit because I do everything.

I recommend reading “The Non-Designer’s Design Book” in conjunction with this book to understand design basics. Together, the two books will put you into the correct headspace to create book covers. Now, you need to produce 1,000+ covers to become proficient.
