5 Takeaways from “Composting for Beginners”

Composting for Beginners” by Bradley Gray is a must-read for us, soon-to-be homestead farmers and gardeners. I’ll admit I tried to create a compost pile a couple of years ago. It went fine, but I should have read this book first.

Composting is any organic matter undergoing or that has undergone decomposition or decay. The general intent is to turn your food scraps, eggshells, grass clippings, etc., into an organic material you can use to grow crops and flowers.

Some people can become overly involved in the finer details, including things like nitrogen levels and ph balances. However, as the author says, composting is natural. Nature will work everything out independently—no need to overthink the process (at least initially).

1) You can use fallen autumn leaves, which we have many in Florida, to make organic compost. Instead of burning them, you can place them in a trash bag, dampen them, and let them sit for a year. This process produces something you can use as compost.

2) Worm composting is excellent indoors in smaller bins. It doesn’t smell too bad, you can control the size of your container, and it’s good for the kids to watch the process.

3) You can also use worms to create “worm tea.” You do this by adding ventilation holes at the bottom of your worm bin. Their juices will drip into your container, and you can use the “tea” to water your plants.

4) You also can make “compost tea” by having two containers. Fill one container with compost and water (50/50). After a couple of days, pour the mixture into the second container, straining the water from the compost. The resulting juice will be “compost tea.”

5) There is a learning curve to worm composting on a larger scale. However, worms can speed up composting and produce very rich compost. On average, a pound of worms can chew through a pound of raw materials every day.

Ensure you have the correct worms for your worm composting bin. The main three are nightcrawlers, red wigglers, and earthworms. It’s best to buy from a dealer.

Composting is good for the environment and your sustainable homestead. I tried it once with mediocre results. However, I am eager to try it again once I get back on my homestead. This is an easy to read, short book. I genuinely appreciate books I can finish in one sitting—a great, informative book.
