Marriage Year in Review: 2008

Story: This year was crazy. I finally returned from my two-year unaccompanied tour in Japan. I returned in March and that is where we pick up the story. I came back as an E-6 or Staff Sergeant. I was eager to get into my job. Kris found an amazing house to rent, and it was also under budget. She actually drove from San Diego, Ca to Yuma, Az by herself. My mom actually decided to move with us to Yuma. She still remains there today (2020). This whole year takes palace in Yuma, Az. It is one of my favorite places. While we were renting the home, Kris started work at Marine Corps Community Services on base (Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Az). She was a cashier for the base. Within six months she was promoted to assistant manager. This was a helluva achievement because Kris didn’t have the best English at the time. I was (am) super proud of her.

While we were renting, we thought we should invest in something. We ended up buying a 3-acre plot of land. It was near the base. Because of the way they calculated payments on land, we figured it would be wiser to build a house on top of the land and live there. And that is exactly what we did. We started the project with our general contractor, Daniel, in June. The house was finished in mid-October. The end of the year was horrible because of the housing crisis and the upcoming Great Recession. However, the house brought us so much joy. We ended up having so many visitors that year. One of the final pictures shows my grandpa, my mom, me, and my child all on one couch. We had 4 generations in the home to celebrate the creation of our little slice of America. We still own this home. I still feel the love of this place. I still think we are both emotionally attached to the house.
